When it comes to powerful women, Sharda Sinha is not far behind. She is a renowned folk singer hailing from Bihar. Sharda Sinha is known for a number of songs. Her most famous work is a theme song for Chhath Puja. Sharda Sinha is also known for receiving the Padma Bhushan Award on Republic Day, 2018.

Early Years

Sharda Sinha was born in Hulas that is in the Supaul district in Bihar. She initially began her career singing folk songs of Maithili. She then expanded her horizons and started singing Magathi, Bhojpuri and Maithili songs. Her Padma Bhushan award in 2018 was recognition of her contribution towards music. Sharda Sinha also performed at the Basant Mahotsav that was organized by Prayag Sangeet Samiti. At this Mahotsav, she sang songs based on the spring season. The advent of the spring season was done with the help of folk songs.

Music Lovers Delight – Sharda Sinha

For people that love folk music, Sharda Sinha is the queen. She performs regularly at Durga Puja celebrations across Bihar. She even had the honor of singing for the Mauritius Prime Minister, Navin Ramgoolam. This happened when he came to visit Bihar.

In case you are wondering, Sharda Sinha has also sung a few songs in Bollywood. She sang the song ‘Kahe Toh Se Sajna’ from the super hit Salman Khan – Bhagyashree starrer Maine Pyar Kia in 1989. Sharda Sinha also sang ‘Kaun Si Nagaria’ from the movie Chaarfutiya Chhokare and ‘Taar Bijli’ from the movie Gangs of Wasseypur 2.

Sharda Sinha’s Chhath Puja Fascination

Sharda Sinha may have earned several accolades through her life however her best-known work is related to the famous Chhath Puja. She had released a devotional album way back in 2006. Almost ten years later, she released two songs based on Chhath Puja. The songs were named Pahile Pahil Chhathi Maiya and Supawo Naa Mile Maai. Both these songs had one purpose – to get people to visit Bihar during the occasion of Chhath. Some of her older songs are also played during Chhath and the devotees never get tired of listening to the evergreen songs that Sharda Sinha has sung.

According to Sharda Sinha, she stayed away from making new music for almost a decade because of the demands of the music companies as well as the need for good lyrics. Once these issues were taken care of, Sharda Sinha did not hesitate to lend her voice. The songs were released in 2016 and it took almost 20 days to finish shooting the songs.

For the song Supawo Naa Mile Maai, the lyrics were written by Hriday Narayan Jha and Sharda Sinha and Shanti Jain wrote the lyrics for the song Pahile Pahil Chhathi Paiya. Both songs were released by Neo Bihar, Champaran Talkies and Swar Sharda. Swar Sharda is nothing but the Sharda Sinha Music Foundation.

Sharda Sinha has sung a total of 62 songs that are based on Chhath. These songs are spread across 9 albums and all are released by T-Series. The last album sung by Sharda Sinha was named Arag. It was based on Chhath and comprised of 8 songs.
